Downtown San Jose's Holiday Season Has a Before and After, and Market Street Marks the Line

November 5, 2026

When you head downtown this December, will Market Street still be open to cars or full of carnival rides? In 2026, the downtown holiday season opens in stages over five weeks. The biggest change comes on Thursday, December 17, when Winter Wonderland moves onto southbound Market Street.

Plan by date and you'll know which version of downtown you're getting. Before December 17, Plaza de Cesar Chavez and Paseo de San Antonio host the season while traffic still runs on Market. After that, the street becomes part of the festival. Discovery Meadow opens two weeks before either one, starting Friday, November 13.

Discovery Meadow Opens First, on November 13

The season's first event is a short walk from the Plaza. San Jose Holiday Lights returns to Discovery Meadow, 330 W. San Carlos St., from Friday, November 13 through January 1. It's open nightly from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m.

This is only its second season. The Mercury News covered its 2025 debut at Discovery Meadow and named DOCA Festival as the producer. Last year Metro Silicon Valley called it a "brand-new light show" with installations by local artists. The 2026 edition has two additions, according to the organizer's 2026 release:

  • Mermaid Current, a new themed area
  • Radiant Canvas, a new public-art feature of lit sculptures by local artists inspired by San Jose street art

The 2026 event also includes the Doca Dream Lab, which turns children's drawings into light sculptures. The official site lists outdoor film screenings and public-art features.

Holiday Lights is the only one of the big downtown events that charges admission. The release lists weekday tickets at $25 for general admission and $19 for children and seniors. Friday through Sunday and on holidays, it's $29 and $23. Children 3 and under get in free. For two weeks it has downtown's holiday crowd to itself, and weeknights are the cheaper nights to go.

November 27: The Plaza and the Paseo Open the Same Day

On Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, the next two pieces open together.

Christmas in the Park lists its Downtown Park Experience at Plaza de Cesar Chavez from November 27, 2026 through January 1, 2027. It's free and open daily from noon to 10 p.m. According to its FAQ, the park opens the day after Thanksgiving every year and stays open daily through January 1, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The 2026 calendar puts the Opening Night Ceremony on Saturday, November 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. The Opening Night VIP Party at The Tavern follows from 7 to 9 p.m.

The rest of the Plaza's calendar is set by date:

Date What's on at Christmas in the Park
Nov 28 – Dec 24 Free photos with Santa every night
Thu, Dec 3 SJSU Night, 6 to 10 p.m.
Sun, Dec 6 Pet-Friendly Day, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sun, Dec 13 Special Inclusion Sunday, sensory-friendly hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sat, Dec 19 Pet-Friendly Day, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sun, Dec 27 Special Inclusion Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Plaza is set up before opening day. Setup Saturday is November 21, and the Community Tree Decorating Days run November 23 through 25. Those decorated trees are the reason the season is free. Christmas in the Park is a nonprofit, and it says more than 90 percent of its budget comes from community fundraising and sponsorships. This year's tree adoptions use a new interactive map, with more than 600 trees listed and community categories starting at $200. The displays go back to Don Lima, who built a single Nativity scene on his lawn in the 1950s. His original pieces still ride in the Lima Train, one of more than 40 animated displays.

Winter Wonderland also starts on November 27, with amusement rides along Paseo de San Antonio. This is the first of its two runs, from November 27 through December 16, and Market Street stays open to traffic the whole time. Admission is free. Rides cost $1.50 per ticket, $25 for 20, or $50 for 50, and a one-day unlimited wristband is $40. From Monday through Friday, showing a VTA pass at the ticket booth takes $2 off a wristband, and one pass covers up to two discounts.

Christmas in the Park's free Santa photos run nightly from November 28 through December 24. Winter Wonderland's first run ends December 16. That gives early December a lot to do with no street closure: free Santa photos on the Plaza, rides on the Paseo, and normal traffic on Market Street.

December 12 and 13: The Maker Market Lands in Run 1

San José Made's Winter Wonder Market is back for its fourth year on Saturday and Sunday, December 12 and 13. It's indoors at South Hall, 435 S. Market St., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry is free, and more than 250 makers, artists, designers, bakers and small businesses are taking part.

That weekend falls during Winter Wonderland's first run, so Market Street is still open to traffic. It's also a Special Inclusion Sunday at the Plaza on December 13. Families looking for quieter hours can visit the Plaza from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then head to South Hall for the afternoon.

There's a second gift market outdoors. Winter Wonderland advertises a holiday gift fair on Paseo de San Antonio with Culture Night Market and dozens of vendors. Winter Wonderland and Downtown Ice have also set up designated vendor zones this year, and each official booth carries "Winter Wonderland Official Vendor" signage.

December 17: Southbound Market Street Becomes Part of the Festival

Winter Wonderland's second run goes from Thursday, December 17 through January 3, 2027. Southbound Market Street closes for it. According to the official site, the closure makes room for larger rides and attractions and an expanded festival area with vendors, food trucks, rides and entertainment stages. The site's ride headings cover both the Paseo and Park Avenue, and ride hours for every location are marked as coming soon.

The second phase looked different last year. In Metro Silicon Valley's 2025 holiday guide, Winter Wonderland opened rides on Paseo de San Antonio on November 28, with more rides added on Park Avenue starting December 18. The 2026 schedule follows the same pattern, with an early set of rides and a bigger expansion right before Christmas. This year, though, the expansion is described as taking over southbound Market Street.

If you plan to drive downtown, eat on Market, or cut through the core on the way somewhere else, check the date first. Everything through December 16 happens with southbound Market open. From December 17 until the season ends, that lane is part of the festival.

The end dates are staggered too:

  1. January 1: Christmas in the Park and San Jose Holiday Lights both close.
  2. January 3: Winter Wonderland's second run ends.

Picking Your Window

Each stretch suits a different kind of outing.

November 13 to 26 is Discovery Meadow on its own. It's the season's only ticketed event, and nothing else downtown is open yet.

November 27 to December 16 covers most of the season with the fewest traffic changes. The Plaza is open from noon, Santa photos run nightly, the Paseo rides are running, and the San José Made market and the SJSU and pet-friendly days all fall in this window.

December 17 to January 3 is the full festival. Larger rides, food trucks and stages fill southbound Market Street, the Plaza is open through Christmas Day, and Winter Wonderland runs two days past the other events.

All three downtown events are in walking distance of one another. VTA's weekday discount makes taking transit cheaper in any window, and the Plaza is open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day if your family wants an outing during the holiday itself.

My family has spent three generations in the Bay Area, and part of what I love about downtown San Jose this time of year is that the season builds week by week. If you're mapping out a December that includes the Plaza, the Paseo, and a night at Discovery Meadow, or you're thinking about a home where these events are close to your door, I'd be glad to talk it through.
